I’m reading Mark Batterson’s most recent book Wild Goose Chase and it’s pretty good so far.
Loved how he used Nehemiah as an example in the beginning of the book, because we’re going through Nehemiah in Future Leaders right now.
I was particularly struck by something Mark said regarding how Nehemiah felt passionate about rebuilding Jerusalem, but was stuck in Babylon as the king’s cupbearer. Being cupbearer for the king meant that you were pretty much in charge of all the wine the king drank. Pretty good job. Respect, responsibility, oh, and you got to try all the wine before the king did, so if someone tried to poison him, well, you’re dead and the king gets a new cupbearer.
Mark’s advice was to do what Nehemiah did:
…be the best cupbearer you can be. This is where the adventure begins.
-Wild Goose Chase, pg 37
That’s pretty much the opposite of what our human reaction is…try to find the quick fix and make a big deal about us not being where we want to be, something I’m sure I’ve been guilty of before. I hope that we can remember to take Nehemiah’s example and to honor God by doing the absolute best we can in our current situations.
