We all want attention. We want recognition. We want people to think we’re cool, or skilled, or nice, or anything. We want them to look at us.
I think the “Look at Me!” syndrome can be one of the most crippling things in ministry.
It’s ok for us to want to do a good job. Where it becomes not ok is when we do it because we want recognition.
One of the reasons we often don’t give ministry away is because we want people to “Look at Me!”. We want them to see what a good job we’ve done, and we want the credit for ourselves.
This is something that we need to be especially mindful of in the Internet age, where so many things someone can do are solely intended to make people “Look at Me!”. We gain friends, fans, and followers, often with the sole purpose of becoming popular.
We need to ask ourselves if what we are doing is to gain attention or to serve others and God.
I believe this concept is so true in ministry today.
love it!
In almost every list pride (or hubris or “vanity”) is considered the original and most serious of the seven deadly sins, and indeed the ultimate source from which the others arise. – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_deadly_sins
